Santa Clara County Fire Department Captain Mike Sanders,
stationed at Morgan Hill
’s El Toro Station, was recognized today by the county Board of
Supervisors as County Fire’s choice for Santa Clara County Employee
of the Month for May. Each month the county recognizes six agency
employees but only one County Fire employee is selected each
year.
Santa Clara County Fire Department Captain Mike Sanders, stationed at Morgan Hill’s El Toro Station, was recognized today by the county Board of Supervisors as County Fire’s choice for Santa Clara County Employee of the Month for May. Each month the county recognizes six agency employees but only one County Fire employee is selected each year.
A member of the fire service since 1974, Sanders served as president of Fire Fighters Local 2987, supports countless fire department public education programs and offers continued service as chaiman of the county fire’s Employee Recognition Awards Dinner.
Sanders, a Morgan Hill native, is active in the community and has served as president for the Jackson Oaks Homeowners Association, the P.A. Walsh Home & School Club PTA and the Live Oak High School FFA Agriculture Boosters Program. He was an original member of the Graffiti Wipe-Out Program and is a past member of the Live Oak Foundation Scholarship Program and the Morgan Hill Kiwanis.
Sanders has volunteered for more than 15 years with the Mushroom Mardi Gras, chaired fundraising efforts to raise more than $200,000 for the Jeffrey Michael Marshall Liver Transplant Fund, was chosen Morgan Hill Times Father of the Year in 1986 and won the Bridge to Life Award in 1988.
Sanders served as a coach, assistant coach and referee for school and youth hockey programs. He organized and operated the snack shack for Live Oak High School football games and organized and helped to build a new swine building for local high school students to use in raising swine for the Santa Clara County Fair.
He helps raise money for VIA Rehabilitation Services and has dedicated more than 20 years of service to the Alisa Ann Ruch Burn Foundation, having held all officer positions in the organization including president of the Central Coast Chapter. Sanders has helped raise thousands of dollars for burn-injured children, served for 14 years as a counselor or staff member at “Champ Camp” for burn injured children and organized eight annual Bear Valley ski trips for burn survivors.
Sanders and his wife, Janet, who live in Morgan Hill, are the parents of Jeff, Anthony and Gina.
