The City Council re-appointed library and parks and recreation commissioners and added some new faces to those commissions Wednesday evening.

The action came after council interviewed all 10 applicants.

For the parks and recreation panel, incumbents Mark Frederick, Don Jensen and Marilyn Librers were re-appointed to new terms.

Frederick is a park planning manager for the Santa Clara County Parks and Recreation Department. Jensen is a landscape architect who has served on many Morgan Hill committees including the Downtown Association and is a past Chamber of Commerce executive director. Librers is a sales manager and volunteer event organizer.

Jeff Bernardini, a Realtor and business consultant who’s served on several city committees, was appointed for the first time. Tom Madalena, a San Mateo County planner who said he is interested in bike lanes and new parks, was chosen to replace Rick Page, who resigned recently.

All terms will end April 1, 2006 except for Madalena’s, which will conclude April 1, 2005.

The new PRC commissioners will take their seats at the next meeting, Tuesday, April 20.

Appointments to the Library Commission were a bit more complicated because a big decision looms after a long period of work by the commission. They have helped write grant applications seeking state bond money to build a new library and are working on advising the council on where to build it.

Incumbents, retired businessman Einar Anderson, Charles Cameron and Chuck Dillmann, Realtor, were reappointed and two new members were added, keeping the commission’s numbers at nine.

Bert Berson, an engineering manager and CEO, who said he is an inveterate reader and visits the library at least once a week, and John Macchia, a businessman, who said he is more concerned with funding continued operations than with building a new library, were also appointed with the stipulation that they not take their seats until July 1.

The council is scheduled to decide on how and where to build a new library before the end of June. Councilman Steve Tate, the city’s representative on the Joint Powers Authority, which runs the library system, said adding new people at this stage would overly complicate matters.

Tate had recommended returning the commission’s numbers to seven; councilman Greg Sellers suggested keeping the current nine based on the workload and the applicants’ qualifications.

They are welcome, he said, to attend any library meeting, to bring themselves up to speed.

David Ainscow had applied for the Parks and Recreation Commission and the Library Commission. Council thanked him for applying and asked him to keep trying.

Applications for Mobile Home Rent Commission are still being taken at City Hall.
