The Morgan Hill Bible Church will present a patriotic concert, free and open to the public, Sunday, May 30, at 7:30 p.m. in the Morgan Hill Playhouse.

“An American Salute” will feature several songs and narrations about the contributions of veterans of past military conflicts, as well as more recent events.

A central theme of the program will be the country and the freedoms Americans enjoy. They were won, and are still being paid for, by the personal sacrifices and dedication of many citizens in uniform. The adult choir of Morgan Hill Bible Church, directed by Tom Gray, and a children’s chorus, directed by Terri Perino, will sing several favorites including “America the Beautiful”, “This Land is Your Land”, “Battle Hymn of the Republic,” “God Bless America,” “This is My Country” and many others.

One medley will feature the pledges and fight songs of the Army, Navy, Coast Guard, Marines and Air Force. Veterans of each branch will be saluted for their contributions.

There will be a Marine color guard for the Pledge of Allegiance and the national anthem. One selection, “An Honor to Serve,” tells the true story of a pilot who was captured during the Vietnam war, and held as a prisoner-of-war for seven and a half years. He was brutally tortured, held in solitary confinement for months on end and finally liberated. His story is a stirring example of the courage and selflessness often displayed by our armed forces, even today. He was awarded many medals for valor and for bravery, and was later elected to the U.S. Senate, but when asked why he risked his life, his answer was “It’s an honor to serve.”

Refreshments will be served after the concert. There will be time to socialize and a chance to learn about several projects that benefit men and women currently in uniform, including how to send cards and letters to the wounded, a “Care package” drive, and procedures for churches, scout groups, etc., to “adopt” some of those serving in Iraq.

The event will provide the Morgan Hill community a means to affirm G.I.s and their families, and show that Morgan Hill appreciates what they have done, and are now doing to preserve the country’s values.
