Linda McGinnis took up quilting around the same time doctors told her she had breast cancer. Eleven years ago during a routine mammogram, a physician at the Saint Louise Regional Hospital Breast Care Center found a lump. Doctors said the cancer invaded her lymph nodes and would have spread to her brain, bones and throughout her body had they caught it any later.

Ninety-three coats is an amount that one would normally expect to find in a thrift store, not in someone's living room, but Melissa Wilder is no ordinary 21-year-old. She hopes that through her coat drive, all of those coats will be gone from her family's house and into the hands of those who need them.

Woman of the Year Cricket Rubino leads wide variety of volunteer efforts

By the time Chamber of Commerce 2013 Woman of the Year Cricket Rubino and her husband Michael “retired” from the Live Oak Emerald Regime in 1998 – more than 25 years after the couple helped establish the marching band – she knew so many people in Morgan Hill that she couldn’t avoid being involved in the community.

Free tax assistance available to low-income workers

United Way Silicon Valley is partnering with the IRS to offer tax assistance at no cost to low-income workers at Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) locations throughout Silicon Valley. Workers who earned $51,000 or less in 2012 are eligible for the free tax service.
