State parks system to be assessed by Parks Forward Commission

State Park officials recently unveiled the “Parks Forward” initiative that will assess California's underfunded state parks system and eventually provide ways to make state parks economically viable again.

Hecker Pass closed until 2 p.m. today

Hecker Pass is closed between Watsonville Road in Gilroy and Carlton Road in Watsonville until about 2 p.m. today due to a downed power pole, according to the California Highway Patrol traffic incident information page. Snapped power lines and phone lines are blocking east and westbound lanes, according to CHP.

Freedom Fest fireworks show relocated for 2013

The annual Fourth of July fireworks show put on by the Morgan Hill Freedom Fest Committee is changing venues for the 2013 celebration, as the grand display will shoot off at the Outdoor Sports Center at 16500 Condit Road, rather than at Community Park at 299 W. Edmundson Ave.

Gilroy woman dies after crashing SUV into Coyote Creek

A 39-year-old woman from Gilroy died shortly after 3:15 a.m. Sunday when the Toyota SUV she was driving southbound on US 101 crashed through a chain-link fence and tumbled 25 feet into Coyote Creek near Morgan Hill, according to a CHP press release.
