Dear Editor,

We had to comment on Frank Dutra’s forced removal of his farm animals from his seven-acre ranch. What are Morgan Hill and its homeowners thinking? The rural towns, for which people say they move to Morgan Hill/San Martin, are no longer a reality.

In 1954, the land was populated with ranches, farms and orchards. Livestock was a way of life. Everyone who owned a plot of land had farm animals, and rode horses everywhere along the country roads. Neighbors depended upon neighbors and people worked together, always lending a hand because we know if we needed help it would be returned. If people don’t want to live in harmony with their neighbors and their animals, don’t move to the country.

Sadly, most of this is gone in the name of “progress.” Self-interest is the name of the game. When we have repeatedly heard people complain of roosters crowing in the morning or birds chirping and awakening them, we are disheartened.

What has happened to people? The “neighbors” who complained to the City about Mr. Dutra’s animals should be ashamed of themselves and apologize to Mr. Dutra first of all. Then they and the community should develop a plan for the animals (pets) return at no cost to Mr. Dutra, and ensure this action doesn’t perpetuate itself. Soon all vestiges of rural community will be gone and the enlightened residents will have only stories or pictures to know Morgan Hill’s history. Maybe that is what the people of Morgan Hill want. If so, shame on you.

If we can help you, Mr. Dutra, it is our moral and neighborly duty to do so. We hope the good people of Morgan Hill feel the same. Thank you Morgan Hill Times.

Karen and Joe DaSanti, Morgan Hill
