Comcast will begin recruiting next week to hire 500 new employees to work at its new call center here.

Comcast is a Philadelphia-based company has more than 60,000 employees in 41 states and more than 4,000 in the Bay Area. It is a cable company that offers both television and Internet service.

Full and part-time positions are available for managers, supervisors, trainers and customer account executives.

Applicants can only apply on-line and are being asked to have electronic resumes available. The on-line process opened on Friday.

“We are taking advantage of technology created in the valley,” said Andrew Johnson, vice president of communications at Comcast. “This gets applicants away from mailing resumes with cover letters takes advantage of the technology. When we started the Concord recruitment, we had over 900 applicants for the first 100 openings. Given the large unemployment in the valley, we are anticipating a similar response.”

The hiring process will go on for some time, though Johnson urges applicants to start filing applications soon. Friday was the first day that applicants were able to apply.

“The recruiting will go in for quite some time,” he said. “The effort will be concentrated over the next 60 days, but that doesn’t mean that all 500 positions will be filled.” He says that the new offices are on track to open in October.

Johnson says that Morgan Hill residents are highly encouraged to apply. As a part of a deal with the city, Comcast will be heavily recruiting local residents.

“We like to encourage all Morgan Hill residents interested cutting down their commute and be able to work in the community that they live in,” he said.

Comcast promised the city to make a “good faith effort” to recruit and hire Morgan Hill residents.

Aside from local faces, Comcast is actively seeking applicants with good foreign language skills. With such a diverse community living in not only south valley, but also the Bay Area, people who can speak another language will be useful, according to Johnson.

“It will be beneficial to customers to have anyone with good language skills,” he said. “But we still encourage as many Morgan Hill applicants to apply as possible.”

Pay and benefits, Johnson said in June, will be similar to Comcast’s call center in Concord but he declined to elaborate further.

Applicants should go to http://careers.comcast.com/ and click on the “Career Choices” link then go to the “Search Jobs” link. An on-line account will need to be set up that requires a valid e-mail address.

The process of interview selection will begin once Comcast decides that enough applicants have filed for the job. Johnson says that the interview process will be held at the Morgan Hill Cultural and Community Center, located on Dunne and Monterey avenues, but there has been no exact date set.

“As soon as we get the numbers we will begin screening,” he said. “We haven’t determined what day will be. It maybe once we find 90 to 100 good applicants.”

Once people are hired, they will attend a new employee orientation to become familiar with the company. After the orientation, there will be a four-week training course for all new employees.

Johnson says that there will be two weeks of classroom studies, followed by one week of “nesting.” Nesting pairs new employees with current ones to give them on the job training.

“(The new employees) will help out on calls, but they will not be the primary,” he said. “They will be able to observe and offer assistance.”

Following the nesting period, employees will return to classroom studies for an additional week.

The new 60,000 square-foot campus is located at 18665 Madrone Parkway, off Cochrane Road. It will house a local call center to improve customer service levels and respond to local Bay Area customer service calls, customer inquiries and other needs for Comcast cable television and other service needs. And it will house customer account executive positions, customer service training and supervisory staff, operations staff and human resource employees.
