A second-place finish in the Harkey tournament at Mission College last weekend has the Morgan Hill Colt Athletics prepped for the start of West Zone tourney play this week.

Playing co-host with San Jose PAL at PAL Stadium, the MH Colt A’s will open West Zone play against Saratoga at 5 p.m. on Wednesday.

As tourney co-host, the A’s automatically advanced to the West Zone tourney.

If the local team wins its opener, it would play Thursday at 7:30 p.m. If it loses, it would play on Thursday at 2:30 p.m. in a loser’s bracket game.

The West Zone championship series is scheduled for this weekend.

According to MH Manager Dave Newton, the Colt A’s appear to be peaking at just the right time for the West Zone tourney coming off a solid showing last weekend.

“We were real pleased with the way the kids played (last weekend) because they hadn’t played as a team yet this season,” Newton said.

The MH Colt A’s won two out of three on the final day of the eight-team tourney and held an 8-5 lead going into the bottom of the seventh (and final) inning against the San Jose Players Club.

SJ rallied for four runs in the final inning to win.

Mike Parese and Nick Tuttle had three hits each, and Shane Christman added a pair of hits and three RBIs in the finale.

Meanwhile, the MH Colt Giants won one of three games at the Sectional Tournament held at Washington Park earlier this month.

Managed by Steve Azevedo, the Giants lost a 2-1 heartbreaker to Los Altos in the tourney opener before beating Fremont 9-2 and falling to Campbell 7-2 in the double-elimination tournament.
