Dear Editor,

Classified employees have been offered a two percent salary increase (not 5 percent like Superintendent Alan Nishino received). In addition to this they will receive an additional one percent if they agree to work an additional two days in the 2006-07 school year and an additional one day in the 2007-08 school year for a total of three additional days of work for nothing, if they are 10 or 11-month employees. If you are a 12-month employee you have to agree to work one extra day starting in 2007-08 (possibly on a Saturday) for nothing. I thought that slavery had been outlawed many years ago. Please don’t try to tell me that these employees want to volunteer these days.

Classified employees have also been told by the administration that they have to give up their “me too” clause in their contract, which simply put guaranteed classified employees the same increases that the other classifications received.

The school district has taken away the day before Thanksgiving, which was a paid day off, away from classified employees.

The district says they will continue to work with SEIU leadership to find an agreeable settlement, but during the last meeting they said, “Take it or leave it.”
