Dear Editor,

Your March 25 headline, “The RDA Here to Stay,” was hardly stop-the-presses news. It could have been written months ago. This was made even more apparent to those of us who took part in the “Community Conversation.”

During the session we were asked to make a choice between No. 1, severe cutbacks in service with no tax increase; No. 3, at the opposite end of the spectrum, maintaining or increasing city services accompanied by tax increases to fund them. Then there was No. 2, also known as the “Goldilocks” solution. It fit just right… minimal cuts in services and minimal tax increases. That was it. No other options were made available to fix the city’s financial crisis. Notable by its absence was a fourth possibility which could all but eliminate the city’s financial shortfall. It seems that if we were attending these meetings and our opinions sought, then all of the possible solutions should have been on the table.

But on the RDA option our city leaders had already made up our minds for us. Tinkering with RDA was not even to be discussed, much less actually endorsed by the groups. Unless the subject was brought up by one or more attendees, there would be no discussion of the merits or lack thereof of including the possibility of making any changes in the RDA. Too bad that the “conversations” were only designed to converse about their pre-selected agendas and not to get our opinions on all the possible solutions.
