Morgan Hill Mayor Dennis Kennedy presented retiring Morgan Hill Unified School District Superintendent Dr. Carolyn McKennan with a Certificate of Appreciation during the July 6 council meeting. Kennedy thanked McKennan for her leadership and years of educational service to the community.

McKennan, who was hired by the school board in 1996, did not seek to renew her contract, which expired June 30.

Kennedy praised McKennan’s nine years of service to the school district, crediting her efforts in increasing educational achievement and educational opportunities for students.

He noted, since 1996, the school district has seen dramatic changes in the form of new programs. McKennan was responsible for bringing 80 percent of third-graders at their reading level, returning the musical instrumental program for fourth through eighth grade students, introducing more programs for economically disadvantaged and Latino students.

Kennedy said, “She was also extremely instrumental in the opening of the new Sobrato High School… We wish you well in all your future endeavors.”

McKennan thanked the council for their good wishes and a clock she received as a token of appreciation from the city.

“We built buildings so teaching and learning could go on,” she said. “Always, my decisions were made (based on) what was best for the children.”

McKennan said she has best wishes for her successor, Alan Nishino. Nishino began his duties as the new superintendent July 1.

Upon her departure, she said she hopes Nishino and the district staff “can build on the shoulders of those who came before us, as I did.”
