Sobrato’s Ashley Grose had two goals and three assists to lead the Bulldog junior varsity girls soccer team to a 6-1 victory at Pajaro Valley in Watsonville on Tuesday.

Also scoring goals for Sobrato were Cecily Nishimatsu, Andrea Nielsen and Katie Alton. Nishimatsu, Alton and Jessi Seda added assists for the Lady Bulldogs.

Sobrato coach Sue Scigliano said goalkeeper Cheyenne Hamby “did a great job” filling in for starting goalie Katrina Olson, who is out with an injury suffered in last week’s match at pacific Collegiate.

The Bulldogs improved to 11-4 overall with the victory, and have two matches remaining this season. Sobrato hosts Santa Teresa on Monday, Feb. 7 plays at Carmel in the season finale on Wednesday, Feb. 9.

Meanwhile, the Lady Bulldogs girls basketball team beat Kehillah 47-24 this week.

Top performers were Nicole Simoneau (15 points and three steals), and Gabrielle Aguirre (14 points, 10 rebounds, and three blocked shots).

Sobrato has three games remaining on its schedule this season.

Britton 8th grade, 7th grade boys both win

Britton Middle School beat Martin Murphy in both the 8th-grade boys game, 60-42, and the 7th-grade boys game, 77-38, in the regular-season finales between the two Morgan Hill-area schools, and now head into the playoffs. This is the first time in school history all four Britton hoops teams (including the two girls teams in the fall) have qualified for the postseason in the same year. The 7th graders capped a perfect 10-0 season with the victory and are the top seed in the playoffs.

El Toro Aquatics tryouts

El Toro Aquatics of Morgan Hill practices at the Morgan Hill Aquatics Center daily and is available for children who can swim 25 yards of freestyle and 25 yards of another stroke. El Toro Aquatics is a year round competitive swim program for children and teens that offers a positive environment for children and teens to achieve their best potentials through excellent coaching in a challenging and enriching athletic environment.

OVYSL tryouts, signups

The Orchard Valley Youth Soccer League is holding tryouts for competitive U9-U14 teams the next two weekends, Feb. 5, 6, 12, 13. For U15-U19 teams, tryouts are Feb. 26 and 27. In the event of rain on either weekend, an additional tryout takes place March 5 and 6. There is no fee for tryouts. Also, the OVYSL is accepting registrations for spring soccer for U6-U12 recreational players. The season runs from April 9 through May 28.

MH Pony Baseball tryouts

Morgan Hill Pony Baseball will hold its annual Player Evaluations on Saturday, Feb. 5 at Britton Middle School in MH. Mustang, Bronco and Pony Divisions only. Tryout times are as follows: 9am, 1st year players with last names A-M; 10:30am, 1st year players with last names N-Z; 12:30pm, 2nd year players with last names A-M; 2pm, 2nd year players with last names N-Z. Bring glove, bat and be dressed for baseball.

MH gymnastics team competes at Top Flight Invitational

The Morgan Hill Gymnastics Club Levels 4-5 boy’s team competed in the Top Flight Invitational in Fremont on Jan. 13. The Level 4 team finished in third place overall and the Level 5 team finished ninth. Dozens of boys from Northern and Central California, between the ages of 6 and 10, competed in vault, parallel bars, pommel horse, rings, floor, and high bar.

Morgan Hill was represented by Level 4 gymnasts KyVon Hughes, Dante Gallardo, Jakob Schaefer, Bryan Miner, Alec O’Grady, and Domenic Zanotto, and Level 5 gymnasts Kealan Baughman, Tristan Baughman, and Caleb Weisenburger.

Judges took the top three performers from each team and combined their scores.

“I am very proud of these boys,” said team coach Sam Quicke. “Many of these kids s are competing for the first time, and things can get scary out there when a few hundred spectators are watching”.

In addition to the team results, individual medals were handed out to the top “all around” gymnasts based on age. Leading the way for Morgan Hill was 8-year-old Domenic Zanotto and 6-year-olds KyVon Hughes, Dante Gallardo and Jakob Schaefer.

Zanotto captured the first place medal in the boys 8-year-old, all-around competition, with a combined score of 52.50.

Hughes took second in the boys 6-year-old division with a score of 48.70.

Gallardo finished third in the boys 6-year-old division with a score of 48.55.

And Schaefer finished fourth in the boys 6-year-old division with a score of 47.10.

The team will compete next at the Kazuki Nakamori Invitational Feb. 12-13 at UC Berkeley’s Haas Pavilion.

MH Lacrosse Club

The Morgan Hill Lacrosse Club will have a mandatory meeting on Thursday, Feb. 10 at 7pm in the science lecture hall at Live Oak High, 1505 E. Main Ave.All players are encouraged to attend. Parents are also welcome.

Morgan Hill Pride coaches needed

The Pride of Morgan Hill Girls Fastpitch Softball Club is now accepting applications for B division coaches for the Summer 2005 season. Pride is looking for coaches in all age groups, including 10s, 12s, 14s, and 16s. The league will accept applications until Friday, Feb. 25. All coaches need to be ASA-certified in 2005 to qualify. Clinics are currently running and can be seen on the ASA website at www.norcal-asa.org. The clinics are only two hours long. The league will form B division teams out of the Spirit recreational league, so girls must play MH Spirit softball to qualify to play for Pride B division play.

Tryouts for the South San Jose Youth Soccer League will be held Saturday, March. 5. Tryouts for girls will be held from 10am to 11:30am, and for boys from 12:30pm to 2pm at the following locations: Boys and girls aged 9-10 at Oakridge Elementary; boys and girls ages 11-12 at Martin Murphy; and boys and girls ages 13-14 at Bernal.

MH’s USYVL signups

Registration is now being accepted for the United States Youth Volleyball League’s Spring season in Morgan Hill. The USYVL is an instructional volleyball league that operates in a co-ed format for boys and girls ages 8-14. The USYVL season runs for eight weeks at Paradise Park and Galvan Park, beginning in April and ending in June.
