Live Oak High’s rugby team advanced to the semifinal round of the NorCal Tier 2 High School Rugby Championships with a convincing 24-0 win over the Montgomery Vikings on Saturday at Elsie Allen High in Santa Rosa.

Playing into a very stiff wind, Live Oak forged a 5-0 halftime lead on a try by junior center Tommy Sparling, rock-solid scrums from a determined forward pack, and dynamic lineout play that stymied Montgomery all afternoon.

The score could have been more one-sided, but Live Oak was unable to touch down after crossing the Viking try line on two other occasions.

There would be no second-half letdown by the Acorns this week.

Tallying tries in the second half were senior scrum-half Eduardo Arias, senior flanker Curtis Giacalone, and junior fullback/winger Dustin Muhn. Rounding out the scoring for Live Oak was Erik Cifuentes, with a pair of conversions. Also playing well for the Acorns was junior hooker Oliver Garcia.

Live Oak travels to Carmichael, Calif. to take on Del Campo/Cougar RFC from the powerhouse Sacramento Valley League this Saturday at 2pm at Will Rogers Junior High.

The winner will advance to the NorCal Tier 2 High School Championship game.

LO hockey hits difficult stretch in first Div. I season

After making quite an impression in its first Division I contest, the Live Oak High hockey team came back to earth in its next two matches against tough competition.

In its second match, LO lost to Del Mar 12-6, then dropped an 8-2 decision to Bellarmine in its third game, revealing the challenge that lies ahead for the local team.

Junior newcomer Dustin Holt showed his value to the team immediately, scoring a goal in his first game against Del Mar and adding an assist against Bellarmine.

Junior Robert Kotval, who rejoined the team this season after a year off, gave Live Oak both its goals against Bellarmine.

Coach Tim Simpson said he is confident in this team’s skill level and says the Acorns are fully capable of playing at the Division I level.

“Their teamwork will be a key factor, as will be 100-percent effort from each and every player,” Simpson said.

On Friday night, Live Oak will have its hands full when it plays defending champion Pioneer.
