Seven new faces will join present board members Lisa Jones and Helen Galione in leading the Live Oak Athletic Boosters Club in the coming school year. At the annual election of the club’s board of directors Tuesday night, the club membership voted in the new panel in nearly unanimous fashion.

Jones, who served as Membership Director this year, was selected by the newly elected board directors to lead the club as president. Pam Mom, retiring after having served as club president for four years, could not run again because of a new term limits clause in the recently revised club by-laws. Galione returns for her second term as board secretary.

Joining Jones and Galione will be new executive board members Shelley Hatakeyama, serving as Vice President, and Joanna Plymale, as Treasurer. Other new members are Judith Benner (2nd Vice President), Julia Nichols (Membership Director), Donna Campagna (Fundraising Director), Gayle Marshall (Member At Large) and Will Niehaus (Program Director). The new board takes office effective July 1.

In other business, the present board voted to fund the replacement of the girls’ softball equipment recently stolen from an equipment storage container at Community Park. The stolen property had a value of $5,200. With a deductible of $5,000.00, the MHUSD insurance policy could not cover the cost of replacing the equipment. The club is also interested in replacing the sound system stolen from Live Oak High the night before the Raymond Relays. The board is awaiting a more detailed report from ASB Advisor Norm Dow showing what was stolen and replacement costs. A decision will be made at the next board meeting.

The board also solicited input from the membership regarding two highly contentious subjects, coaches stipends and team transportation to athletic events. Discussion on both topics is to be continued.

Gavilan’s Curtis Lilly signs to play at D.II university

Gavilan football and basketball player Curtis Lilly signed a letter of intent to play football with East Central University (Okla.) on Tuesday.

Lilly, an Iowa native who came to Gavilan in the fall as an NAIA transfer from Northwestern College in Minneapolis, will be a punter for the Division II school next season.

The 6-foot-5, 220 pound Lilly visited the East Central campus a few weeks ago over spring break and liked what he saw.

“It’s in Oklahoma where people worship football,” Lilly said. “They love their football and they really seemed interested in me. For them to fly out a punter and give me a scholarship, especially for a D-II school, that doesn’t happen a lot. I feel very fortunate.”

Lilly, who played mainly wide receiver in high school and fulfilled punting duties out of necessity, really began concentrating on it last year.

“It was a new challenge,” the two-sport star said.

Gavilan coach John Lango said he was happy for Lilly.

“He’s a really, really good athlete,” Lango said. “There were opportunities for him basketball–wise. But he decided he really wanted to go ahead and play football.”

Ghost Guerrero angles for SF fight

Imagine a day of food and fun at the Gilroy Garlic Festival followed by a mad dash up Highway 101 to catch a Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero fight in San Francisco that very evening.

No, it’s not a solid date. But Guerrero’s new co-manager, Shelly Finkel, wants his fighter to get more exposure in front of local fans. He said Wednesday that there are “plans in the works for the up-and-coming featherweight to make his Bay Area debut as a pro at Kezar Pavilion” in July, the San Francisco Chronicle reported Thursday.

Guerrero (15-0-1) scored a 12th-round technical knockout of Adrian Valdez in his first defense of his NABF featherweight title last Friday in Lemoore. He was a special guest at last Saturday’s championship night of the San Francisco Golden Gloves, where he won the 119-pound title in 1999.

The Gilroy native told the Chronicle: “As soon as I signed with Shelly, the first thing he mentioned was, ‘I want you fighting in your backyard. I want you in the Bay. Hometown fans don’t want to see you on TV. They want to see you live.”

Finkel posited there was a “70 percent” chance of Guerrero’s next bout – against an opponent to be determined – taking place at Kezar Pavilion.

Guerrero, along with Olympic gold medalist Andre Ward of Oakland, received a raucous welcome from fans at the S.F. Golden Gloves.
