gavilan summer hoops camp

Kids grades 3-8 are invited to attend the Gavilan College Men’s Basketball Summer Camp Aug. 9-13 at Gavilan, 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd. in Gilroy. Hosted by the Gavilan Rams players and coaching staff, including Head Coach Chris Shoemaker, the camp is designed to provide quality basketball instruction, including basic skills in a fun atmosphere. Instruction will focus on offensive and defensive fundamentals, shooting, rebounding, ball handling, passing, dribbling, stretching and conditioning. Each camper will have an opportunity to use their skills in game competition. Sessions for grades 3-5 will be held 9 a.m. to noon, with sessions for grades 6-8 from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Fee is $65. mt. madonna challenge

A major fundraising event of the South Valley Symphony, the Mount Madonna Challenge, takes place Sunday, Aug. 29. This year’s event will feature a 6K SalamanderWalk and Race commencing at 8:30 a.m., registration at 7:30 a.m., followed by the featured 12K Mt. Madonna Challenge Race beginning at 9 a.m. The race is sponsored by the Gavilan Joggers and Striders and the South Valley Symphony.

All entries are to report to the Sprig Lake picnic area site at the base (Gilroy side) of Mt. Madonna County Park. Pre-registration fees are $20 with shirt and $13 without. Registrations received after Aug. 24 will be priced at $25 with shirt and $18 without. Completed registration forms should be made payable to the South Valley Symphony, Mt. Madonna Challenge, and mailed to P. O. Box 1347, Gilroy, CA 95021-1347. T-shirts will be guaranteed for all pre-registered entrants. Online registrations may be done at “active.com” or “allsportrunning.com”.

Medals will be awarded to the first three places in age group in both races, while trophies will be awarded to the first place man and woman in the 12K race only. Age divisions for both men and women have been established as A 10-18; B 19-29; C 30-34; D 35-39; E 40-44; F 45-49; G 50-54; H 55-59; I 60-69; and J 70 and over.

mh pride to hold tryouts

The Pride of Morgan Hill Softball program will be having two tryouts for its 16U ‘A’ Fall Ball team on Sunday, Aug. 15 and Sunday, Aug. 22 at Community Park in Morgan Hill.
