LO’s Jones, Herrera compete at Foot Locker
Fresh off impressive performances at the State Cross-Country Finals the previous weekend, Live Oak High standouts Cobbie Jones and Lisa Herrera competed at the Foot Locker Western Region Cross-Country Championships at Mount San Antonio College in Walnut on Saturday. Competing against the top runners from the Western U.S., Jones took 41st overall in the Seeded Race and Herrera finished fourth overall in the Junior Girls Race. Jones, who ran a 19:38 over the hilly, 3.1-mile course, beat her previous course PR by 39 seconds over last season when she finished 71st. Herrera finished in 20:38 in her first year competing at the Foot Locker. The top eight runners in the Seeded Race advance to Foot Locker Nationals in San Diego this Saturday.
Loyola, LO grads third at NCAA polo finals
Competing in the NCAA Men’s Water Polo Finals at Stanford last weekend, Loyola Marymount, withLive Oak High grads Justin Coleman and Scott Marshall, took third place with a 6-5 victory over Princeton on Sunday. Loyola Marymount (21-11) was dropped into the consolation final after losing to tourney host Stanford 14-6 on Saturday. UCLA beat Stanford 10-9 in double overtime to win the NCAA championship on Sunday. Coleman and Marshall, both 2002 grads, earned All-America honors and were named Tri-County Athletic League co-MVPs during their senior seasons at Live Oak.
El Toro club to host water polo tourney
On Saturday, the El Toro Brew Masters water polo club will host a six-team tournament at the Morgan Hill Aquatic Center. Teams will be divided into two pools, with El Toro, Tri-Valley and Soquel Wax’em in Pool B, and Bay Area Masters, Gold Country and San Jose Water Polo Club in Pool A. The tourney begins at 8am, with pool play, and the finals will begin at 2pm with the final match beginning at 4pm. El Toro plays its first match at 9am against Tri-Valley, and its second match at 1pm against Soquel Wax’em.
Sobrato athletics fundraiser at Sinaloa
Sinaloa Cafe will be hosting a Dinner Night Out fundraiser for the Sobrato High Athletic Booster Club on Tuesday, Dec. 7 from 4-9pm. Sinaloa, located at 17535 S. Monterey Road in Morgan Hill, will donate 5 percent of all proceeds to the Sobrato Boosters. Patrons need to tell their servers they are participating in the fundraiser.
SCBA still accepting signups
On a space-available basis, the South County Basketball Association is still accepting applications for its winter session. Boys and girls in grades 1-4 will be building teams at their annual jamboree this weekend. Boys and girls in grades 5-9 team-build on Saturday, Dec. 18. Morgan Hill Pony baseball is holding signups for the 2005 season. Just bring a certified copy of your child’s birth certificate or other proof of birth date to Mountain Mike’s Pizza, located in Morgan Hill (Tennant Station and Monterey Road) on Saturday, Dec. 11, or Saturday, Jan. 15, from noon until 2pm, complete the standard league Registration form, and pay the fees. Mt. Madonna YMCA youth hoops signups
Youth basketball league registration for boys and girls ages 2-16 has begun at the Mt. Madonna YMCA located at 17666 Crest Ave. in Morgan Hill. The registration deadline is Dec. 19. Youth basketball league games are played every Saturday from Jan. 8 through March 12 at YMCA and local facilities.
