LO hockey starts off spring season strong

The defending Division III fall champion Live Oak High roller hockey team started its spring season with an upset victory over Santa Teresa on Friday.

The Acorns, who also finished second in the Division II ice hockey playoffs during the winter season, kicked off their Division I debut with a 9-7 victory over a longtime Division I squad from Santa Teresa.

Down 3-1 in the early going, Live Oak responded with a goal from senior Matt Edgar off an assist from sophomore Kyle Dutra to pull within a goal.

Dutra followed with two more goals to give LO the lead, then junior Chase Norman added another goal off an assist from sophomore Brian Costello.

Dutra added another goal and an assist, Costello added four goals and an assist, and Norman added an assist.

Sophomore Scott Alexander, back from an injury, played strong on defense.

And senior goalie Michael Anvari, back from vacation, did a great job in the net.

Junior Ricky Lasher was also back on the open ice after filling in for Anvari in goal during the winter ice hockey playoffs.

And, new this season to the Acorn squad is junior Robert Kotval, who also played strong for Live Oak.

A Rollin Ice director said Friday’s matchup was one of the best Division I games he had seen in the last two years, and that the other teams are taking the Live Oak team seriously.

Knowing they have their work cut out for them this season playing in the highest division and that the move up in competition will require a major effort from the entire team, the Acorns couldn’t have asked for a better start to the spring season.

LO Boosters to hold board elections

The Live Oak High Athletic Boosters Club will hold its annual election for members of the Board of Directors on Tuesday, April 12 at 7pm. The election will take place in the Live Oak High Library.

Adhering to the Club’s bylaws, a nominating committee was formed in February of this year to identify and nominate a slate of candidates for the coming session. The candidates must be members in good standing to qualify, and the positions include a one-year term. The term year is defined as July 1 through June 30 of the following year.

The Club will seek to elect nine members to the board. The four officers of the newly elected board, the President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer, will be chosen by a show of hands vote of the newly elected board members.

Candidates identified to date by Nominating Committee chairwoman Shelley Hatakeyama include Debbie Adamo, Judith Benner, Helen Galione, Lisa Jones, Gale Marshall, Julia Nicholls, Will Niehaus and Joanna Plymale. Hatakeyama said nominations are still being accepted and may be submitted on the evening of the election. Only registered members of the Boosters Club are allowed to vote in the election. They are identified as those members who have paid their annual membership fee or dues.

The Live Oak High School Athletic Booster Club was formed for the purpose of promoting, assisting and supporting the athletic programs and activities at Live Oak High. Its primary mission is to provide financial aid to those athletic programs at LOHS that need assistance. Incorporated in 1984, the club is a non-profit organization and its directors, officers and members serve the community without pay or any form of remuneration.

In past years the Club has supported most or all of the athletic teams in some fashion, whether by supplying the funds for uniforms, equipment or facility improvements. In the 2003-04 academic year, the club contributed the funds to pay the stipends (salaries) for those coaches whose sports teams were cut during the MHUSD budget crisis.
