OVYSL fall soccer accepting signups

Orchard Valley Youth Soccer League is now taking sign-ups for the 2005-06 fall recreational season. Play begins Sept. 10 and ends Nov. 20. Boys and girls ages 4-16 are eligible (birth dates 8/1/1989 to 7/31/2001). Fees range from $65 for U6, $95 for U8 and $120 for U10-U16. Teams are filled on a space-available-only basis after July 15.

San Jose Earthquakes to host Spanish First Division club Deportivo Alavés

The San Jose Earthquakes have announced that the club will host Spanish First Division club Deportivo Alavés in an international exhibition match on Monday, Aug. 8 at 7:30pm at Spartan Stadium. This will be the first-ever match-up between the Quakes and a Spanish First Division opponent.

A finalist in the 2001 UEFA Cup, Alavés cruised to the championship game led by Jordi Cruyff, where they dropped a memorable 5-4 decision to Liverpool FC. Based in the Basque capital of Vitoria, Deportivo Alavés was relegated to the Spanish Second Division in 2003, before earning promotion back to the First Division last month. A proud team that boasts 10 years in the Spanish First Division, the 84-year old club made a triumphant return to the top league in 1995, eventually leading to the successful run to the UEFA Cup Final in 2001.

Silicon Valley Extreme baseball tryouts

Tryouts for the Silicon Valley Extreme’s 10-year-old and 11-year old competitive travel baseball team will be held July 26 and 28 from 4:30pm to 8:30pm. Call for tryout locations.

Live Oak sports camps

Organized by Norm Dow and taught by high school coaches and teachers, the annual Live Oak Sports Camps are continuing through the summer and still have openings. They include instruction in everything from baseball, softball, basketball and lacrosse to street hockey and science and math, along with plenty of other “camps.” There is still plenty of room in most of the week-long camps, which range in cost from $90-$150. Signups are being accepted at the Live Oak gym.

LO sports camps’ rugby session next week

A non-contact, touch rugby session will be held the week of July 25-29 as part of Live Oak High’s Sports Camps. There are still openings for boys and girls of all shapes and sizes from 10-14 years of age. All players will learn the fundamentals of rugby – passing, catching, kicking and support.

Sobrato summer sports camps accepting signups

Many outstanding coaches from Sobrato High will provide instruction in the necessary fundamentals and skills at the Sobrato High Athletics Camps through Aug. 12 this summer. The week-long specialty camps, which will be held at the Sobrato campus with its brand new athletic facilities, will include training ina variety of sports. In addition, Sobrato will sponsor the “Got Game” camp, a three-hour, 3-on-3, half-court basketball tournament. The sports camps are designed for kids aged 6-17, and costs range from $75-$140. YMCA Camps signups

Mt. Madonna YMCA in Morgan Hill is now accepting registration for camps which take place at the Morgan Hill YMCA, 17666 Crest Ave.

Half-day sports camps are for 3-5 year olds and continue through Aug. 19. The cost is $133/week.

Full day sports camps include: a basketball camp from Aug. 1-5 ($223/week); Y-World of Sports from Aug. 15-19 ($223/week); and golf camp from July 25-29 and Aug. 8-12 ($350/week).

These camps are only for those entering grades 1-3 or 4-6.

San Jose State offers basketball camps

The coaching staff of San Jose States University’s Men’s Basketball Program will be holding a four-day camp this summer.

Session II runs from August 8-11 (Monday-Thursday). The camp offers early drop off that starts at 7:45am and late pick-up until 5:30pm at no additional cost.

Please note that camp runs from 9am-4pm. The cost of the camp is $155 for early bird registration and $170 for late registration.

The dates for early bird registration is July 29 for session II.

Camp staff will include the SJSU men’s basketball coaching staff, players, as well as other area coaches.

The camp emphasis will be on fun as well as basketball fundamentals, skill enhancement, and team building.

Elite high school pitcher’s camp begins next week in MH

Taylor Made Baseball is offering an elite High School Pitcher’s Camp in Morgan Hill beginning next week.

The camp, which will cover everything from pitching mechanics to mental training, will run from July 25-29 from 9am-4pm.

Each day will cover a different aspect of the best position in baseball. Players will receive instruction in: pitching mechanics; throwing mechanics; defensive baseball; mental preparation and execution; pitching levels and locations; developing physical and mental pre-game and post-game regimens; arm-strengthening; physical conditioning; weight training; and proper nutrition for high school athletes. Each morning will be devoted to pitching mechanics and defensive baseball. In the afternoons, there will be a trip to 24-Hour Fitness to work on proper weight routines and physical conditioning. On Tuesday of that week, the group will spend time on arm strengthening and mental training with Alan Jaeger. On Thursday, the Morgan Hill Physical Therapy Office will provide the players with conditioning training and proper arm care tips, in addition to information on how to recognize and diagnose arm pain and what to do. Thursday evening will be a parent get-together to discuss what to do in getting your son ready for college, both academically and athletically.

Players will receive: J-Bands; Alan Jaeger’s Book, “Getting Focused, Staying Focused”; Evaluation Form; Charts to record weight training progress, arm strength progress and nutrition; Weight workout handout; Physical Conditioning handout

Rich Taylor and a local staff of coaches will lead the camp. Alan Jaeger will conduct his “Thrive on Throwing” program and mental training sessions. Fresno State pitching coach Tim Montez will instruct players on what it takes to pitch at the Division I level.

The camp will be limited to just 24 players in order to insure quality instruction

Players must be in high school or entering high school in the fall. Cost of the camp is $325 for 30 hours of instruction and will include admission to 24-Hour Fitness, the J-Bands and Alan Jaeger’s book. Deposit is $150.
