Pride 12U Green, Gold cap tourney seasons

Capping their tournament season, the Pride 12U Green and Gold teams competed in the Hot July Nights tournament in Santa Maria this month.

The tourney included 14 other teams from Bakersfield, Fresno, Clovis and Southern California area.

Both local teams did well in pool play on Saturday, with Pride Green earning the second seed in Pool A and Pride Gold with a second seed, as well, in their respective pools.

But both teams came up short in Sunday’s championship play, losing close games and ending their tournament season.

Some of the highlights are as follows:

Pride Green 10, Clovis West Outlaws 0

Lead by the one-hit pitching performance of Samantha Berjarano, the game was close until the third inning when Pride Green broke through with a single by Sarah Bernardini and then an RBI single by Priscilla Orona for a 1-0 lead.

In the fourth, the Pride Green bats came alive and the team sent 13 batters to the plate. Briana Anglikowski, Alyssa Vukcevich, Priscilla Orona, Sarah Bernardini, Nikita Patel all had key hits in the inning to drive in runs. To end the scoring, Katie Machado stole home to end the nine-run outburst.

Ventura Gold 7, Pride Green

The Green team got up early on the strong Ventura Gold on Sunday by scoring two runs in the first inning. Ventura came back and tied the score in the bottom of half of their inning.

The game remained tied until the fourth when Ventura scored five runs on five hits. The Pride scored a run in their last at-bat when Jacey Turay had an RBI single.

The Pride Green loaded the bases and sent the tying run to the plate, but was unable to complete the comeback rally, and the loss finished their season.

Pride Gold 9, Clovis West Flash 3

In the fourth, the Pride Gold bats came alive to break open a 2-2 ball game. The offense was paced by Jenni Hinman with an RBI single and Erin Leggett’s double to score key runs to break open the game.

On defense, Kelly Henningsen went the distance on the mound, supported by outstanding defense from Shante Cerniglia, Yessi Ceja, Annika Camacho and Kelly Lima to keep Clovis at bay.

Sanger Stars 6, Pride Gold 5

The Pride Gold was in control and leading nearly the entire game behind the strong pitching of Kelly Henningsen, who also had three hits in the game.

Also contributing was Nestley Combs, who had two hits also and was extremely solid behind the plate on defense.

The Pride Gold was leading 5-3 into the bottom of the sixth when Sanger scored three runs in their last at-bat for the comeback victory, ending a very successful Pride Gold season.

Quakes’ Davis added to MLS All-Star roster

San Jose Earthquakes midfielder Brad Davis has been named as one of three injury replacements on the MLS squad for the MLS All-Star Game against Fulham FC on Saturday at Columbus Crew Stadium in Ohio.

In last Saturday’s issue, Dustin Vertin’s name was misspelled, and the North team’s two touchdowns were scored after a punt return and a fumble recovery.
