Stramback Memorial Golf Tournament set for June 20
It’s been six years now since Stephen Stramback died in a horrific auto accident. But the Live Oak High grad and former Gavilan student is still helping local students succeed.
That’s because his father, George, and his friends have collaborated on the annual Stephen Michael Stramback Memorial Scholarship Tournament, which keeps his memory alive while helping raise money for scholarships for local high school and community college student-athletes.
This year’s tourney is set for Monday, June 20 at Coyote Creek Golf Club. This is the second year the event has been held at Coyote.
The elder Stramback said there are about 80 golfers signed up for the event and there is still room for more. Sponsors are also welcome. Last season, the event drew 108 golfers.
This year’s event could feature an appearance by pro golfer John Ellis, a former Live Oak and Gavilan student.
There is a 10:30am check-in and a noon tee-off. After the tourney play is over, there will be a 5pm social hour and a 6pm dinner.
Cost is $175 per player, exactly the same as it was in 2000. The cost includes greens fees, golf cart, putting contest, mystery hole, tee prizes, unlimited range balls, box lunch and dinner, and a raffle and silent auction.
The tourney play will feature teams of four golfers competing in a scramble format and a modified shotgun start.
There will also be prizes for the longest drive, closest to the pin, and hole-in-one.
Proceeds help pay for a series of $500 scholarships for local student-athletes who are awarded based on a combination of athletics, academics and extra-curricular activities.
This year’s scholarship winners include:
- Live Oak High’s Samantha Calios and Jef West.
-
Gilroy High’s Amy Kishimura.
-
Gavilan College’s Kevin Moyles, Kevin Noto, Mitchell Vargas and Jarrod Anderson. (Moyles and Noto also won last year.)
For information about how to sign up for the tourney or to contribute to the scholarship fund, call Coyote Creek at (408) 463-1800.
