Cheers for the upcoming opening of the new courthouse in Morgan
Hill. It will provide a wonderful facility for workers and visitors
who need to conduct court business in South County while boosting
foot traffic and sales in downtown. We share concerns about the
excessive construction time and cost overruns, but now that the
building is finally about to open, it’s time for area merchants to
think of creative ways to entice court workers and visitors into
visiting their shops and restaurants.

Cheers for Morgan Hill’s All-League basketball honors.
The boy’s and girl’s basketball teams from Live Oak and Sobrato produced nine first- or second-team all-leaguers this winter, as voted by Blossom Valley Athletic League coaches.
The Sobrato boy’s basketball squad led the way with four honorees, including three juniors: Ryan Williams, and brothers Chris and Bryan Bradley. Williams, a 6-foot-3 forward who led the team in scoring with 17.8 points and five rebounds per game, joined shooting guard Chris Bradley (11.3 ppg) on the first-team all-Santa Teresa Division list. Bryan Bradley (8.3) was named to the second team along with senior point guard Rauley Cambra (7.2).
Behind them, the Bulldogs placed third in the Santa Teresa and earned an at-large bid to the CIF-Central Coast Section Division II playoffs.
“It was a successful season for us,” Sobrato coach Lawrence Crawford told reporter Scott J. Adams. “We had great senior leadership, and a lot of younger guys stepped up. We still have the majority of our team coming back. So expectations will be higher next year.”
Live Oak, which missed the Division III boys tournament by a few points, received two all-league nods. Junior Michael Schreiber (11.7) made the first-team all-West Valley Division list at guard, and junior forward Dominic Leach, who averaged 7.3 points and five rebounds, was a second-team selection.
Cheers for the upcoming opportunities to influence the route the new high-speed rail system will take through Morgan Hill. The two options are for the high-speed rail system to be raised above the railroad tracks that run just east of downtown or to be raised above U.S. 101. Both options have advantages and disadvantages. Learn more and take your opportunity to influence decision makers at the following meetings:
-Wednesday, March 25, 3-7 p.m., Roosevelt Community Center, San Jose
-Thursday, March 26, 3-7 p.m., Hilton Garden Inn, Gilroy
The route that the $10 billion high-speed rail system takes is an important decision that will have a lasting effect on our community. Let’s make sure officials make the best decision possible.
Cheers for Morgan Hill Unified School District board members who rejected an inadequate budget “proposed as a done deal” by district administrators. Asking tough questions and demanding complete answers from administrators is an important part of any elected officials’ job and we’re glad to see that happening in the MHUSD board room.
Times are tough and no one likes the difficult choices that must be made – closing schools, increasing class sizes, laying off teachers – but it’s imperative that these decisions be made with the full range of options. Otherwise, the board simply functions as a rubber stamp.
