Cheers to Mr. and Mrs. C and to Donna Foster Ruebusch, three educators who have devoted their lives to teaching. Stephen and Caroline Caracciolo packed up their classroom June 4 at Nordstrom Elementary and Britton Middle schools for the last time after a combined 59 years of teaching. It’s a bittersweet goodbye. Two talented, dedicated and well-loved teachers are leaving, but it’s something they have worked for their entire lives, and something they richly deserve. Have fun in that Corvette. Ruebusch, a Live Oak High School teacher since 1975, was honored with the Morgan Hill Unified School District’s Teacher of the Year. It’s her effort to provide a meaningful experience for her students that sets her apart, said Jay Totter, MHUSD’s assistant superintendent of human resources. Way to go Donna.

Jeers to Caltrain officials for even considering eliminating service to South County. The agency was looking at ways to close a $10 million budget deficit, and cutting service to Morgan Hill, San Martin and Gilroy was one of those. Thankfully, board members found other ways to close the gap and kept the meager service to South County. What the board needs to do is find ways to increase ridership, and that means increasing options for riders.

Cheers to Live Oak, Sobrato, Central and all other high school seniors who successfully navigated 13 years of schooling, including the four toughest – high school. Know that what you have accomplished is not the end of your schooling, but the beginning of real-world learning. Now it’s off to college, or work. Regardless of what path is chosen, take what you have learned, apply it and strive to do your best every day. That is all anyone can ask of you, and the very least of what you can ask of yourself. Congratulations Class of 2010.

Jeers to Morgan Hill Access Television for producing a televised discussion about the events at Live Oak High School on Cinco de Mayo, without any Hispanics. The discussion, moderated by Councilman Larry Carr, included Morgan Hill School Superintendent Wes Smith and Morgan Hill Mayor Steve Tate. If you’re going to televise a discussion that centered around the tension between Hispanic students who felt disrespected because some white students wore patriotic clothing that day, it might have been a good idea to include a Hispanic on the panel.

Cheers to Ann Sobrato High School runner Alan Rios and Live Oak High School high jumper Stephanie Armstrong. The two seniors made it to the CIF Championships where they both performed admirably. Rios passed four other runners in the final 100 meters to finish sixth in the 800 meters with a personal best of 1 minute, 53.57 seconds. And, while Armstrong finished quietly battling through shin splints, she ended her prep career with a jump of 5-feet, 4-inches, a mark she strove for as early as last spring.
