Cheers to everyone involved in the “First Dog” world premiere earlier this month at CineLux Theaters. While the would-be star-studded event didn’t draw stars Dan Aykroyd, Dolly Parton or Eric Roberts, it did include Tommy “Tiny” Lister and scores of Ann Sobrato High School students, teachers and parents who helped in the movie’s production, from acting to staging.

Although the premiere may not have been the extravaganza seen in Hollywood, it was a success for Morgan Hill. Here’s to hoping Hollywood and Sobrato make this an annual tradition.

Jeers to the Santa Clara Valley Water District for vowing to fight a lawsuit that’s proven the agency ignored the law and for continuing to further the mistake for the victimized well owners who haven’t (yet) sued. Last month, a judge ruled the agency violated Proposition 218 and illegally collected groundwater charges. The decision orders the district to refund more than $4.6 million, a year’s worth of the charges, to Great Oaks Water Co.

The decision could have a widespread impact on the county’s 4,000 well owners, who include the cities of Morgan Hill and Gilroy. Water district staff have said the agency has used the same process to set groundwater charges for all local well owners – not just Great Oaks – and for every year at least since 2005-2006.

Cheers to Ann Sobrato High School students for taking on the challenge of getting a football stadium – with restrooms and concession facilities – built. Despite the significant financial and political hurdles that could take years to work through, it could be a great civics lesson.

The students have collected more than 900 signatures from those who support the would-be project, but it’s the political hurdles that will be the toughest to leap. First, the field is in San Jose’s greenbelt. Second, there is a 2001 agreement as a result of litigation that prohibits permanent facilities or outdoor lights. Finally, should they successfully navigate through those hurdles, they’ll need to get approval from the Local Agency Formation Commission. Good luck.

Jeers to those who refuse to pick up their dog’s waste. If you’re walking your dog in public and it makes a deposit, it is your civic duty to pick it up and properly dispose of it. There’s nothing worse than stepping in a pile and tracking it home. Please, people. Pick up the poop.

Cheers to the 2010 Salute Morgan Hill winners. Woman of the Year Teri Larice, Man of the Year Lynn Liebschutz, Educator of the Year Ellen Yu Costa, Student of the Year Franchesca Kellett, Business of the Year Cherisse’s Hair Salon and Volunteers of the Year the Morgan Hill Kiwanis Club. The awards honor those who have worked hard to give back to the community during the last year. They will all be feted at an award ceremony Jan. 30. Congratulations to all.
