Dear Editor,

We have all at one time said our farewells to neighbors and friends. Either they have retired, found a new job or just moved to a place they thought was a little better for their style of living. Anyway, they left and kept a promise to “stay in touch.”

I had a friend who retired and for years kept that promise. He wrote wonderful stories of all the events that occurred to him and his family during the year. He wrote about the good and not so good and when things hurt and what made him happy. He was philosophical at times and later in life wandered a bit in his paragraphs but they were always interesting. I have saved all of his season greetings because that was the only time we stayed in touch. Each year as we were both growing older, I wondered if he would give up and not send me his life events or that possibly he would be gone.

Today, I just read in the Morgan Hill Times that my good friend, Calvin Chick had passed away. Cal was a hardworking gumshoe reporter for this paper.  All the old timers knew him to be fair, honest and sensitive to the community he loved. I’m not going to get his yearly greetings but I will always remember Cal Chick as a terrific man, good husband and father, GREAT reporter and darn good friend who kept his promise.
