Golf for future leaders

– The Ann Sobrato High School senior class is holding its first golf tournament befitting the leadership program.

The tournament is Friday, May 13, 2011 at Coyote Creek Golf Club. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. and silent auction, cocktails and dinner will begin at 5:30 p.m. It costs $165 to golf in the tournament and $50 for only attending the dinner and silent auction. Sponsorship opportunities range from $200 to $1,000 and they are looking for auction item donations.

Volunteer with the Red Cross

Speaking on education

– Internationally respected educator Lily Wong Fillmore will discuss “Our Children and Our State’s Future: Can Our Schools Meet the Challenge?” at 7 p.m. Wednesday, at Oakwood School, 105 John Wilson Way. Fillmore’s career as an educator started in Santa Clara Valley where she worked as a volunteer teacher with the children of migrant farm workers. An emeritus professor (UC Berkeley), Fillmore specialized in the study of language learning in school age children and the education of language minorities. Her address will focus on the problems currently facing California’s schools and what can be done to restore them to excellence.

Hop into spring

– Join others for a charming ‘Hop Into Spring’ story time with Miss Bunny presented by storyteller Julie Engelhardt. Celebrate the Earth

– The South County Earth Day celebration takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, and will include a host of vendors, children’s activities, raffle prizes, a Congressman and a celebrity chef.

The free event takes place at the Granary, 17500 Depot St.

Congressman Jerry McNerney will be available from noon to 1 p.m., Environmental Excellence Awards will be handed out at 1 p.m., and chef Steve Caposio will answer questions and sign autographs from 2 to 4 p.m.

In addition, there will be an e-waste drop off location.

Arts and crafts at Casa de Fruta

– The 17th annual Easter Weekend Arts and Crafts Fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Casa de Fruta Train Station area, between the restaurant and Casa de Sweets.

Among the different arts and crafts for sale at the fair will be candles, photography, woodworking (including custom made redwood signs while you wait), wind chimes, jewelry of all kinds, handbags, leatherwork, metal art, country folk art, scarves and more.

There will be live music by Good Medicine from North Fork. They play folk, blues, and mellow rock, and original tunes in their own style.

Award-winning poet at Gav

– Internationally acclaimed poet Jamaal May will present his award-winning work at a free public reading from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday April 26, at Gavilan College, 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd.

He will also lead a special three-hour writing workshop from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday April 27, for the first 20 students who call (408) 848-4889. 

Wine, food benefits FFA

– The Morgan Hill Ag Booster Foundation 2011 Spring Auction raises money for the Live Oak and Sobrato Future Farmer of America programs. This year’s event takes place at 4 p.m. April 30, at Guglielmo Winery, 1480 E. Main St.

There will be wine, food and a live and silent auction. Tickets are available now or at the gate, and includes wine, food and a donation drawing.

Wine stroll coming

– The first Wine Stroll of the year is scheduled for 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday April 30. Tickets are $25 each. See www.morganhilldowntown.org for a list of participating businesses and wineries, then get ticket at those businesses. The event usually sells out and tickets are limited.

Recycle and help Japan

– Bring old and unused electronics and e-waste to the Morgan Hill Buddhist Community Center, 16450 Murphy Ave., between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. April 30 and help those in Japan following last month’s earthquake and tsunami.

For those who cannot make this date, donations by check are welcome and can be made out to either “Northern Japan Earthquake Relief Fund” or to “Hongwangi Earthquake Relief Fund” and sent to Dr. Jon Hatakeyama, 370 W. Dunne Ave. Ste. #3 Morgan Hill.

LOHS class of 1961 celebrates

– The Live Oak High School class of 1961 will celebrate half a century from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 14.

Have coffee with the Mayor

– Morgan Hill Mayor Steve Tate will be joined by Assemblyman Bill Monning, at his next coffee with the mayor event at 10 a.m. May 14 at Hot Java, corner of Second Street and Monterey Road in downtown.

Ask either or both questions, give suggestions or opinions – whatever, it will be a wide-open session directed by those who attend, Tate said.

Help make the city beautiful

– Help Morgan Hill become even more beautiful by trimming shrubs, planting flowers, picking up litter and painting, from 9 a.m. to noon May 21.
