History: Tucked away in a commercial building on Vineyard Boulevard since September of 2005, just off the corner of Monterey Road, is People and Planet. The business is a fair-trade store that began from the home of Erin and Mike Monroe in Gilroy in March of 2003 and has evolved into a distribution and retail business.
Services: Fair-trade products such as organic coffees, teas, chocolate and crafts are sourced from developing countries in Asia, Central and South America and Africa. The business also markets Earth-friendly food service items including bio-compostable tableware and “green” home and personal-care products.
Philosophy: People and Planet embraces the fair-trade business model, which strives to help farming cooperatives in the developing world through a structure that includes paying fair prices to producers, establishing long-term direct trade relationships, providing access to affordable credit, improving the working and living conditions of co-op communities so that more families are able to access health care and education and promoting sustainable agricultural practices. The company tries to build long-lasting business relationships that allow all involved the chance to succeed in the marketplace. Treating people and the Earth with dignity is the essence of the company’s philosophy.
