As the fall sports season begins to wind down, three Sobrato High teams are within striking distance of bringing home the school’s first league championship for a team sport.
The boys and girls cross country teams are in first place at the conclusion of the meet season and will try to secure the title next Monday at the league championships.
The football team, fresh off its come-from-behind win against Andrew Hill, is 3-1 and trails first-place Willow Glen (6-1, 4-0) by a game with three remaining, including this Saturday’s showdown with the Rams at 2pm that will determine if the Bulldogs are contenders.
But the team with the first chance to bring home the banner is girls volleyball. Sobrato takes its 10-0 Blossom Valley Athletic League West Valley Division record to Oak Grove tonight and a win would clinch the league title for the Bulldogs.
Sobrato, which swept third-place Del Mar on Friday to stay unbeaten, holds a two-match lead over Oak Grove (8-2). The win would give them a three-match lead with three to play and secure any tie-breakers that would be needed and make the Bulldogs league champs.
Given where Sobrato was at this time last year – when the Bulldogs went 0-12 in the Tri-County Athletic League – that’s a remarkable accomplishment.
While the competition in the West Valley Division doesn’t stack up to that of the TCAL, the way the Bulldogs have mopped the floor with their competition has been impressive. They have swept their past seven league opponents and have lost only two games in their 10 league matches.
All this while not even having the benefit of a home gym at which to play, which has prevented the girls from large crowds.
Here’s wishing the team luck tonight as it tries to bring the school home a title. And here’s encouraging all Sobrato supporters to make the trek up to Oak Grove at 5pm to watch it.
