Entire team returning from last season brings confidence
Morgan Hill – After one game and a scrimmage, Sobrato boys soccer coach Ricardo Martinez said he is pleased with how his team is looking.
“The whole team I feel pretty good about,” Martinez said. “I’m confident we will do well because I have everyone coming back from last year.”
The Bulldogs had a scrimmage game against St. Francis before opening their season with a 1-1 tie against San Benito.
Martinez said he used the St. Francis scrimmage to get a look at his new players. He said that the results of the game didn’t change the lineup significantly.
“They players I had last year are much stronger,” Martinez said.
Included in the returning players is last year’s leading goal scorer Murilo Almeida. Martinez said he will also be looking to Arturo Ceja, who he said should make an impact at midfield.
“Overall, I think we have a really good group of kids,” Martinez said.
Also returning is goal keeper Trevor Newcomb.
“Trevor kept us in a lot of games last year,” Martinez said.
As with both Live Oak and the other Sobrato teams, the boys soccer team will have to adapt to a new league after moving over from the Tri-County Athletic League.
“From what I hear, the competition is a little bit tougher in the Blossom Valley Athletic League, even in the C Division,” Martinez said about the move to the West Valley Division of the BVAL.
He added that over the course of the season, he will be learning the different teams.
Sobrato will continue play today against the same St. Francis team it scrimmaged against on Thursday.
This time Martinez said he will be playing his regular starters.
“I will be expecting a different outcome today than last week,” Martinez said.
