Gilroy – A big “Welcome Sobrato” sign was hung on the north wall of the Gilroy gym Tuesday night before the volleyball match between the Mustangs and the Bulldogs.
But that welcome didn’t last for long.
Host Gilroy took care of Sobrato in three games, 25-10, 25-12, 25-17 for its second TCAL win. Sobrato, meanwhile, fell to 2-14 overall and 0-6 in league.
Sobrato struggled to get into any kind of offensive rhythm for most of the match, but did keep things competitive in the third game. At one point, Gilroy had an 8-point lead. But Sobrato cut the lead to 18-14 on a couple Mustang errors, an ace serve and a kill by middle Jordyn Hanne that went off the top of the net and dropped onto Gilroy’s side of the net.
Gilroy’s aggressive serving held the Bulldogs to just three more points for the rest of the game.
“I just think we were off tonight, out of sync,” said Sobrato head coach Gayle Yankee. “Live and learn, you know? Sometimes lessons just come hard.”
Hanne led Sobrato with five kills. Setter Nicole Simoneau had seven assists.
Sobrato travels to Salinas for its next game Tuesday Oct. 18.
