Sobrato wrestling placed 42nd out of 74 schools in the 32nd
annual Mid-Cal Classic held Friday and Saturday at Gilroy High
School. The Bulldogs were led with multiple wins by Zack Zhang,
Evan Enright and Bryan Gomes, who were in position to place after a
solid opening day.
Zhang would be the only one to do so, finishing eighth at 147
pounds.
Sobrato wrestling placed 42nd out of 74 schools in the 32nd annual Mid-Cal Classic held Friday and Saturday at Gilroy High School.
The Bulldogs were led with multiple wins by Zach Zhang, Evan Enright and Bryan Gomes, who were in position to place after a solid opening day.
Zhang would be the only one to do so, finishing eighth at 147 pounds. After winning two of his first three three matches the junior was two victories away from wrestling for third place Saturday. He pinned Fremont’s Samer El Nounou durng a counterattack but lost 5-2 to Chris Jin of Gunn. Zhang fell into the seventh-/eight-place match, where he was pinned in the first round by Pitman’s Logan Wolfley.
Friday Zhang (18-8) pinned Overfelt’s Eric Morales with a half nelson and defeated North Salinas’ Edy Antonio 3-2. He lost by fall to Joey Lavallee of Reno (Nev.), the No. 3-ranked 147-pounder in the nation.
“He wrestled some tough matches, so it was great experience for him,” Sobrato coach Erik Lupercio said. “I was happy with how he did in all his matches.”
Enright (15-7) was one victory away from placing at 162 pounds. The senior went 2-1 Friday with close wins over Paso Robles’ Matt Dansereau, 6-4, and Terra Nova’s Abdallah Mahmoud, 3-2, sandwiched around a 9-6 loss to Overfelt’s Matt McConnon. Saturday Enright won his first match by forfeit over Dylan Forzoni of Salinas but was pinned by Buhach Colony-Atwater’s Cesar Sotelo, who went on to take seventh.
Gomes (15-8) nearly rallied into the 122-pound seventh-/eight-place bout after losing his first match, 5-2, to Victor Covarrubias of Buhach Colony. Gomes reeled off three consecutive wins, as the senior pinned Ashwin Madavan of Monta Vista, won 6-0 over Brandon Tran of George Washington–San Francisco and 8-4 over Nathan Nungaray of Madera South.
Gomes lost his final match, 5-0, to Paso Robles’ Zak Holmes.
Daniel Johnson (128 pounds) and Thomas Burback (140) also won matches Friday for SHS, which returns to Santa Teresa Division duals at 6:30 p.m. today against visiting Mount Pleasant.
Host Gilroy cruised to the team title with 299.5 points, including first-place finishes by Victor Olmos (128), Paul Fox (134), Willie Fox (147) and Jose Lara (287). Three other Mustangs placed.
Defending champion Selma was second with 246.5 points.
