A book discussion group may be just the place for you. Oprah has revived her very popular book club, but watching Oprah does not give you a chance to participate.

Consider joining your friends and neighbors at the Morgan Hill Library for a monthly discussion of a variety of titles, both fiction and nonfiction. What do you have to do? Check out a copy of the book from the library, read the book and come to the meeting.

You won’t be quizzed about your reading. You are not required to write anything. You simply show up and listen to the members of the group express their ideas. You may jump in at any time, or just listen. Just come prepared to have fun.

Recent books discussed include Bel Canto by Ann Patchett and Life of Pi by Yann Martel.

The September book will be The Book of Illusions by Paul Auster. In this book a “man’s obsession with a silent-film star sends him on a journey into a shadow world of lies, illusions, and unexpected love. This stunning novel plunges the reader into a universe in which the comic and the tragic, the real and the imagined, the violent and the tender dissolve into one another.” (Publisher’s marketing)

October will be a nonfiction selection, the Natural History of the Senses, by Diane Ackerman. This is a luscious tour of the five senses. Her essays explore fascinating information about how the senses operate and will change the way you perceive the world around you.

The November title is What a Body Remembers by Shauna Singh Baldwin. Baldwin integrates the political history of India with the personal histories of two Sikh women who are riddled with as much anxiety as the national history.

In December we take a vacation break from the monthly Book Group and will resume again in January. The 2004 titles will be announced later this year. Come to one of the discussions and suggest your favorite book for the 2004 discussions.

There are two sessions to choose from: the last Monday of the month at 7:30 p.m., or the last Friday of the month at noon, a brown bag session if you would like to come on your lunch hour. Pick the session which fits in with your schedule and join us in the meeting room of the Morgan Hill Library. Happy reading.
