The 0.95-acre trash-and-weeds-infested parcel along Monterey Road at Central Road, which was placed on the Times’ Eyesore of the Week watch on Nov. 23, is getting a cleaning.

The contractor hired by owners William and Kathleen Capogeannis has begun cleaning the site on Dec. 18, and John Cienega said he’s been to the parcel several times since and has removed debris, including plastic cups. He has gathered rocks and concrete pieces as well as a large tree branch, which he plans to cut and dispose next week, he said, adding that he would at that time also rake ground over with a tractor and spray weed killer on the Monterey Road-facing edge of the property.

The city sent a notice to Capogeannis’ trust, which owns the land, in late November. It stated that the city “received a complaint regarding trash and debris” and was in violation of the nuisance provision of the city code.

Cienega said he hopes the owners of the donut shop adjacent to the parcel make sure the trash container outside the business doesn’t overflow onto the Capogeannis’ property.

“Something has to be done, because it’s not the owner’s problem if all those papers go over there,” Cienega said. “They’re all paper cups.”
