A man was injured in a bicycle versus Jeep accident at Main Avenue and Monterey Road about 3 p.m. today.

Bicyclist Robert White was taken to San Jose Regional Medical Center for treatment of his injuries. Coincidentally, his general doctor, Dr. Ricardo Perez, operates out of the office building at that very intersection. Perez called 9-1-1 and bandaged White’s torso and right wrist.

White was stopped on the northeast corner of Main and Monterey. After the light turned green he began pedaling west on his black Trek, according to eyewitness Bill Ledwell. That’s when Jovita Patino Almanza of Morgan Hill, traveling north at about 25 miles per hour on Monterey in her black Jeep, ran the red light at the intersection and struck White in the side, police said.

“The light was yellow. I was coming through the intersection and the cyclist crossed right in front of me. I tried to brake but it was too late,” Almanza said tearfully, with Cpl. Ray Ramos translating her Spanish to English. Almanza and her two children were not injured. They were on their way to Britton Middle School’s back-to-school orientation, she said.

White complained of pain in his neck and on his left torso to the attending paramedics. His right leg was scratched but not bleeding.
