Cisco Jim at the San Juan Bautista State Park Saloon

If you’re ever walking around San Juan Bautista on a Saturday and feel a bit out of place, there’s an explanation for it.
On the first Saturday of every month, the Plaza History Association and San Juan Bautista State Historic Park put on the Living History Days event in and around the facilities near the Mission in which participants educate by acting out what it was like to live in the 19th century in the area. It wouldn’t surprise attendees to run into blacksmiths, Civil War soldiers or mountain men.
Residents are welcome to attend, while the state park fee is $3 per person or free for those age 16 and under. It also is a regular destination for schools on field trips.
Participants at the most recent Living History Days event Jan. 2 noted how crowds are sparse in the winter due to holidays, but that the activities particularly pick up in the summer, especially for Father’s Day weekend when the groups will hold the special Early Days gathering June 20 and June 21.
