Should Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, the alleged Fort Hood shooter, be
tried as a terrorist?
THIS WEEK’S QUESTION:

“Should Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, the alleged Fort Hood shooter, be tried as a terrorist?” Yes: 2 No: 9

? Karen Anderson: “No. He should be tried at a military tribunal.”

? Bert Berson: “Yes. Presuming that the federal courts are more open and transparent.”

? Chris Bryant: “He committed terrorist acts, but as a member of the armed forces he should be tried as a traitor.”

? David Cohen: “No. He should be tried as a murderer.”

? Dennis Kennedy: “It depends! Much more information is required. Is he sane? Did he follow a direction from a terrorist organization or act alone with the intention to act as a suicide killer? Let’s not rush to judgment, but be deliberate and thorough in evaluating the proper course of action.”

? Linda McNulty: “No the military court will take fine care of that.”

? Henry Miller: “No. Contrary to my previous opinion on a similar ATWC question, he apparently acted alone and did not try to influence others, thus not meeting the definition of terrorism. Also, I believe if his name was Pat O’Reilly, Giuseppe Triolo, Jose Garcia, or even Hank Miller, rather than Nidal Hasan, we wouldn’t even be asked this question.

? Lisa Pampuch: “Based on what we know now, which is precious little, no. However, terrorism implies civilian victims, so it doesn’t seem to apply here.”

? John Quick: “Not unless there is more than has been revealed. It is enough that he is a coward and multiple murderer. That he tried to glorify his sickness with the veil of misguided religious fanaticism does not make him a terrorist or jihadist – he is just a cowardly murderer.”

? Emily Shem-Tov: “I don’t think we know enough yet about the whole situation, but it seems likely the Army will want to exercise jurisdiction over the case and will continue their investigation and then base what charges to go forward with on that.”

? Steve Staloch: “No. Based on available information it appears he is a garden-variety, sociopathic killer.”
