Was it a smart move by Tom Campbell to drop out of the
Republican primary for governor to seek the Republican nomination
for senator?
THIS WEEK’S QUESTION:
“Was it a smart move by Tom Campbell to drop out of the Republican primary for governor to seek the Republican nomination for senator?” Yes: 8 No: 2
? Karen Anderson: “No. “He is fighting not only Carly (Fiorina) but an incumbent Senator. “At least the governor’s seat was open.”
? Bert Berson: “Yes. Given that it is his only chance of winning? Definitely.”
? Chris Bryant: “Yes, less contested race with more likelihood of winning based on the money that his competitors can bring to bear. Unfortunately, it’s mostly about how much money you can spend these days.”
? David Cohen: “Yes, it was a realization that he would be unable to compete in a campaign against two other candidates who could by themselves, bankroll the rebuilding of Haiti let alone the campaign for California governor.”
? Dennis Kennedy: “Unfortunately, yes! Campaign outcomes, especially at the state and higher levels, seem to be won by the candidate who can raise the most money or get their message out to the broadest number of voters. It’s disappointing that someone with as much knowledge, and credentials, as Tom Campbell, had to drop out of the Governor’s race due to lack of sufficient campaign funding.”
? Julian Mancias: “Yes. Tom must of felt that his chances for winning the election were higher in the senatorial race. So for him, sure, it was a good move.”
? Lisa Pampuch: “No. I’m disappointed by the decision that seems to be motivated by desperation to win some office, any office. His reason for the move doesn’t ring true to me; he’s gone from facing one wealthy high-tech star (Meg Whitman) to facing a different wealthy high-tech star (Carly Fiorina).”
? Emily Shem-Tov: “It certainly shakes up both of those races quite a bit. And really, who would want to go be governor given the problems facing the state right now? The Senate race must have looked more appealing in lots of ways.”
? Jeff Smith: “Yes, because I believe Meg Whitman is a better candidate for Governor, and he will be a much better Senator than Boxer if he can dethrone her.”
? John Quick: “Yes. He was destined to be an also ran in the Governors race. He may have more impact in the Senate race. The successful CEO of Ebay is a much more formidable opponent than the unsuccessful CEO of HP.
