Do you trust Facebook or other social media sites to keep your
personal information confidential?
THIS WEEK’S QUESTION:
“Do you trust Facebook or other social media sites to keep your personal information confidential?” Yes: 1 No: 11
? Karen Anderson: “Not in the least. Check out www.PleaseRobMe.com to see how crooks can find out you are not home. I quit on Drop Facebook Day, May 31.”
? Bert Berson: “No. I am concerned with how they may be using my personal information. KQED forum had an excellent discussions of the issues on Tuesday morning. You can find it at http://www.kqed.org/a/forum/R201010190900.”
? Chris Bryant: “No, constant change provides new ways for information to be accessed and misappropriated. Everyone should keep in mind that anything placed on the web will exist forever and may well be accessible at some time by anyone.”
? Bob Chidester: “No. But it’s not something I worry about since I don’t use them. Having seen some of the comments by people who do use them tells me that some people have too much time on their hands and they need to ‘get a life.’ ”
? David Cohen: “No. Too many opportunities for too many people to make mischief.”
? Mary Anne Groen: “No, but I’m not so naive to think they ever would. My deepest, darkest secrets are in my head and until Facebook (or any of their developers) comes up with the Vulcan mind meld app I think I’m safe there!”
? Dennis Kennedy: “No.”
? Julian Mancias: “No. Although it may be unintentional, it is very likely that social media sites like Facebook due release personal information.”
? Jeff Nunes: “No. And that is why I give them as little information as possible. Given the very nature of these sites, and their need for advertising dollars to stay functioning, I think it’s unrealistic to give them that kind of trust.”
? Lisa Pampuch: “No. As Sun co-founder Scott McNealy said, ‘You already have zero privacy – get over it.'”
? Jeff Smith: “I think you can pretty much trust these sites to keep your information safe – if not there would be a mass exodus from them. What you cannot trust is information you foolishly give to ‘friends’ via these sites. Who knows what damage they could do with it.”
? Steve Staloch: “No, Facebook’s pseudonym should be Openbook. Facebook has a unique user ID that is a public part of the user’s profile and anyone can connect the ID to the user, even if information settings are set to private.”
