pay higher taxes?
”
THIS WEEK’S QUESTION:
Question of the week: “Do you agree with Warren Buffett who said that the rich should pay higher taxes?”?” Yes: 8 No: 3
- Karen Anderson: “Yes. If Warren Buffett thinks so, then the argument that the rich need the money to create jobs is specious. Not to mention suspicious.”
-
Dave Appling: “Yes. Anguished claims that the super-rich are ‘job creators’ have proven hollow; with some courageous exceptions, these risk-averse folks are just sitting on their loot. Start, but don’t end, with closing the most egregious loopholes. But certain corporate taxes should be reduced, such as the huge repatriation tax on overseas profits that businesses could be applying to infrastructure and jobs here in the U.S.
-
Bert Berson: “Yes. It’s the right thing to do and certainly much more appropriate than cutting social security, Medicare and Medicade.”
-
Chris Bryant: “Yes, not to be punitive, but as a percentage of income. Higher income earners do tend to pay fewer taxes than lower income earners.”
-
Bob Chidester: “No. They already pay a disproportionate amount of mixer. 50 percent of the people don’t pay any taxes at all. Talk about not having any ‘skin in the game.’ It’s the same old class warfare from the left. Let’s focus more on excessive government spending and less on taxing productive people who work hard and contribute to this society. Buffett is more than welcome to give his own money back to the government.”
-
David Cohen: “Yes, most of us probably need to pay higher taxes. Or the tax code must be rewritten to close the loopholes so that the government takes in an adequate amount of money. Regardless of desire, the budget cannot be balanced solely with spending cuts. It simply isn’t realistic to believe otherwise.”
-
Julian Mancias: “Yes. Studies have shown that the reason given for not taxing the wealthy, trickle down theory, is not true and accurate.”
-
Henry Miller: “How could anyone say, ‘No?’ It is the most American thing anyone has said in a long time. Maybe he can get his pals Gates, et. al. to join him. I think he should be our number one draft choice for president. Or at least we should canonize him.”
-
Jeff Nunes: “No. It depends on your definition of ‘the rich.’ People who are Warren Buffet rich? Sure, especially if they want to. Families making more than $250,000, or is it $200,000., or $150,000 (the President has said all these at some point) that this administration calls ‘rich,’ absolutely not.”
-
Lisa Pampuch: “Yes. And Buffett’s New York Times column making his case for raising taxes on those with taxable incomes exceeding $1 million does an excellent job of explaining why.
-
Jeff Smith: “No. They already pay much higher taxes. I think Buffett is a hypocrite. If he personally wants to pay more there is nothing stopping him from making out a check to the IRS for billions. I believe the same rules should apply to all. We should have a flat tax wherein everyone pays the same percentage of their income – if you make less you pay less, if you make a lot you pay a lot. I think everyone should pay something. As it is now almost 50 percent of people pay no federal income tax!”
