sports camps now.
For nearly as long as he was Live Oak High’s football coach, Norm Dow has been running the school’s summer sports camps now.
It was nearly two decades ago that Dow first began the popular local summer organization, which then included just two all-sports camps.
Today, the Live Oak Sports Camps include 32 different camps, including everything from official high school sports such as basektball, baseball, softball, football, and more, to club sports like lacrosse, to ceramics, drawing and painting, and science.
According to Dow, the sports camps have become an integral part of the community.
“It’s an all-win situation,” Dow said. “The community likes it, it raises money for the (high school sports) programs and the coaches like it.”
Many of the camps are taught by current Live Oak coaches, who use the camps to help develop athletes into the high school program.
Coaches include Mark Cummins, Glen Webb, Brett Paolucci, Mack Haines, Barry McDonnell, Jeff Olivetti, Mike Rubino, Tony Goble, Dean Raymond, Christy Musselman, Ignacio Herrera, Linda Seals, and Laura Coleman.
Among those camps are baseball, baseball and pitching, softball, basketball, golf, badminton, soccer, tennis, track, football, diving, field hockey and volleyball.
New this year are the lacrosse camp, taught by Brian Oliver, and the wrestling camp, taught by Manny Fernandez.
In addition, there is a street hockey camp, a cheerleading camp, and a series of all-sports camps which include a wide variety of games and activities.
As many as 15 Live Oak students are hired to help out at the camps, Dow said.
Many of the camps are also focused around learning and activities such as the science and math camps, the ceramics camps, the draw and paint camp, and the Liveoakelodeon camp, that focuses on games.
All camps will be held at Live Oak except the baseball and golf camps.
Dow said the camps are a good way to keep youngsters active during the summer months.
“They go home happy and tired, and that makes the parents happy,” he said.
Camps begin on June 14 and most run for a week. The final camps end on Aug. 13. Cost varies by the camp. Applications can be picked up at Live Oak High. Details: call Norm Dow at 847-2075.
