Dear Editor,

The pictures of an Andy’s Orchard fruit tasting in the Morgan Hill Times reminded me that your readers may enjoy the article “Andy Mariani’s Orchard of Dreams” in the July 2005 issue of Gourmet Magazine. The caption under the Times pictures says that one visitor came to the tasting at the urging of her friend. That friend definitely knows what she is talking about.

As a long-time resident of Morgan Hill, I took the orchard for granted, visiting the store often, especially during the summer for apricots, peaches and cherries. This year my involvement with the UC Cooperative Extension Master Gardener Program of Santa Clara County made me realize that Andy’s Orchard is internationally important for stone fruit research.

There are 250 varieties of cherries, apricots, peaches, nectarines and plums at the orchard and some are Mr. Mariani’s own signature varieties. I recently attended a tasting tour guided by Mr. Mariani, who delivered a college-level lecture on raising fruit to his visitors. I tried to taste as many stone fruits as I could, but it is impossible to taste everything at one visit, so I shall return soon. After all, according to Gourmet Magazine, “Today, Mariani’s fruit farm is considered my many to be the finest in the nation.” How can I resist that? Morgan Hill is the home of an international treasure.

Suna Herder, Morgan Hill
