The graduating class of 2005 got to spend our very last activity as Live Oak students on Friday night. Shortly after we all tossed our caps in celebration, we were off to grad night.
The event started at 10pm and lasted until the wee hour of 5am. The theme of Las Vegas seeped out to a few seniors throughout the year, but for the most part it was kept highly secretive. Most of the class thought it would be Mardi Gras, as that was the senior class homecoming theme, and some still thought so despite the Elvis impersonator who came during lunch earlier in the week to promote ticket sales.
The entrance was closed at midnight, but the majority of the crowd filed into the bag check room around 11. The outside area was filled with plenty of things to do such as a rock climbing wall, and an inflatable obstacle course which allowed two people at a time to race through, but quickly turned into a relay as students formed teams of three or so. This was just as popular as the inflatable bungee race. Two at a time were harnessed in with a bungee cord and protected head gear and then raced along the Velcro wall to see who could slap down a bean bag the furthest. There was also sumo wrestling. This was by far the funniest to observe as friends suited up in enormous sumo outfits and attempted to wrestle their contender to the mat. Along with all the games there was a stage with a live band playing who was kind enough to allow groups of brave souls to sing karaoke style.
An interesting addition was the confession booth. Seniors sat in front of a camera and let out their deepest darkest secrets they’ve been dying to tell.
The night wouldn’t have been complete without a rest area, this was set up in the dance room and allowed students to come in and relax if they were becoming tired. This room also held the memory boards that parents created for their senior grads.
The entrance to the gym began with a beautiful foil column display that had flowing water stream down the entire night. The hallway was decorated as the Hard Rock Café which had tons of music memorabilia and even a motor cycle. The gym foyer was set up like Caesar’s Palace. Seniors could get a henna tattoo by artists dressed in none other than Greek goddess attire. Hair dressers also had stations set up where girls lined up for fun up-do’s.
One of the most creative areas was the restrooms. The girls was done up like Paris, with roses petals everywhere and beautiful pictures up. The guys was themed Excalibur and although I personally didn’t experience its incredible detail, I caught word that it was equally as nice as the girls.
The middle section of the gym was divided in half. The left side was the Venetian, where a DJ played music and seniors danced the night away. It had amazing stained glass walls, and a gondola which sat in a pool of water complete with two bridges. Impersonators like Marilyn Monroe and Elvis sang in the beginning of the night.
Most of the excitement was in the remainder of the gym which was a replica of the Luxor Casino. Here tables were set up with dealers for Black Jack, Texas Hold ‘Em, and Craps. Everyone was allowed three bags of chips and could play until they were satisfied with their earnings or until their luck ran out. Along the side wall were slot machines which were almost always filled. And of course there was a prize table for everyone to cash in their earnings.
The night could be summed up in no less than these two words: insanely incredible! The senior class owes every parent who put their heart and soul into this year long project a huge Thank you. Not only did we have an amazing time, but you kept us safe as well. You gave us a once in a lifetime experience that we will remember forever! The gym was completely transformed into Las Vegas!
