The Live Oak girls and boys water polo teams couldn’t have asked for better matchups in the first round of CCS championships.

Playing at home on Wednesday, the No. 6 seed lady Acorns beat the No. 11 seed Pioneer Mustangs (15-9) 12-6, advancing to the quarter finals.

Freshman Rachel Cretcher led all scorers with four goals, scoring a goal per quarter.

“I was nervous for this game because we beat them twice this season,” Cretcher said. “So they were kind of out for revenge.”

Katie Rick started the offense for the lady Acorns with a goal early in the first quarter, and senior Jessica Poon scored the first of her two goals late in the quarter off of teammate Priscilla Orona’s miss.

Her goal gave Live Oak a 3-2 lead, which the Acorns would build upon and maintain to the end.

Rick scored again with 38 seconds left in the quarter to give Live Oak a 4-2 lead going into the second.

Rick finished with three goals.

Cretcher pushed the lead with a goal halfway through the second quarter, and assisted Rick on her third goal with 1:23 left in the half.

Goalie Shelby Carillo made one of many saves at the 1:03 mark, and the Acorns led 6-2 at halftime.

Orona, Alisa Pinabarsi, and Danielle Dukes each scored a goal in the third quarter to extend the Acorns lead heading into the fourth quarter.

In the second round of the CCS water polo championships the lady Acorns (17-4) face the Santa Cruz Cardinals (21-5) tomorrow at 11:40 a.m. at Independence High School.

The lady Acorns recently defeated the Cardinals on Oct. 30 by one goal, giving them an idea of what they’re up against.

“They’ve been known to beat harder teams,” Cretcher said. “But my goal is to get past the second round.”

BOYS

With equal vigor, the No. 5 seed Live Oak boys water polo team defeated the No. 12 seed Pioneer Mustangs 17-7 on Wednesday night.

Senior Sam Cretcher led all scorers with seven goals, while junior Steven Rick scored four goals.

Live Oak (15-9) jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first quarter, and never let the Mustangs (11-12) into the game.

Sophomore Cody Coleman and junior Patrick Acevedo each had two goals for the Acorns, while senior Alex Sennart and sophomore Jason Van Trood had one a piece.

The Acorns advance to the second round of the CCS championships where they take on the No. 4 seed Burlingame Panthers (17-6) at 2:00 p.m tomorrow at St.Francis High School in Mountain View.
