Aside from carrying on the tradition of excellence as the new head coach of the Live Oak football, Jon Michael Porras is just plain excited.
“I’m excited and I’m blessed,” said Porras. “I’m excited to get this team going.”
Porras grew up in Morgan Hill and graduated from Live Oak in 1998 and is taking over the varsity team from Rick Booth. He spent the past two years as the junior varsity head coach.
In the first weeks of spring football, he sees a lot of potential.
“I coached all of the upcoming juniors and seniors when they were freshmen and sophomores,” Porras said. “Our spring training has been pretty successful. We have a good mix of players.”
Beside getting off to a good start for the 2007 football season, Porras most importantly wants to start a program of molding his players into model citizens.
“My goal is to build a program that would build kids into men,” Porras said. “I want to involve the community. Winning is important, but not as important as developing my players on a personal level.”
Porras says he plans on meeting with his players and their families on a one-on-one basis to create a close atmosphere for his team.
He also plans on setting individual goals and creating positive examples with his players.
Booth, who is stepping down to defensive coordinator for the Acorns, is confident Porras will lead the team in the right direction.
“He’s a quality young man,” Booth said. “He understands the game and the team will be in good hands. He’s got a good staff around him and he know how to lead.”
For the most part, Porras and his family are happy to be back where he started his football career and plan to carry on the athletic excellence the program has always noted.
“Me and my family, my wife and my son are all excited about the new position,” Porras said. “I have support from the entire community and it is a blessing to coach where I once grew up.”
