The No. 6 Live Oak boys water polo team (20-10) is scheduled to face No. 3 Gunn (21-9) at 9:20 a.m. on Saturday at Independence High School in San Jose in the CCS Division I Quarter Finals.

A win will advance the boys to the semi-finals on Wednesday at Independence. A time has yet to be determined.

Live Oak reached the CCS Playoffs by capturing the Tri-County Athletic League crown. The team finished league play undefeated.

Girls Water Polo

The Acorns, who were ranked No. 8 heading into the CCS Playoffs, lost in the first round 9-8 to No. 9 Soquel in triple overtime on Wednesday.

Had Live Oak won, they would have had an uphill battle, most likely facing No. 1 St. Francis in the second round.

Live Oak (21-6) reached the playoffs by finishing league play undefeated and winning the TCAL Championship Tournament.

The Acorns will return all but two of their starters next season, which increases their chances to return to CCS in 2004.

Girls Volleyball

Live Oak (18-5), ranked No. 5 in the CCS Playoffs, sneaked into the tournament on points after defeating Gilroy in the season finale despite going 4-6 in league play. The Acorns had a bye in the first round and will play No. 4 Milpitas (19-16) in the quarterfinals on Saturday at 3 p.m. at Leland High School in San Jose.

Cross Country

The girls team (2-3) leapfrogged Palma by defeating the Chieftains in the TCAL Championship Tournament to earn a CCS berth.

Although the boys team – also 2-3 – didn’t make the postseason, two individual runners – Billy Wong and Nick Mott – did. The boys came up just short of sending their team, missing by one place. Wong, Mott and the girls team will compete at the CCS Playoff meet on Saturday at Crystal Springs in Belmont. The boys are scheduled to race at 12:10 p.m. and the girls at 12:40 p.m.
