Live Oak golfer Eric Justesen played his last high school match on Monday in the NCGA/CIF High School Championship on at Mira Vista CC.

Justesen recorded a 75 to tie him for eighth place in the meet. Rob Grube of Robert Louis Stevenson won the event with a 68. RLS also came in first as a team.

Ellis takes fourth in state

Gavilan sophomore golfer and Live Oak graduate Chris Ellis placed fourth in the State Community College Championships held at King River GCC.

Ellis, who was the No. 1 golfer in the Coast Conference, shot a 143 (71-72) on the 6,695-yard, par-72 layout. Ellis also earned a spot on the All-State team.

Ellis wins honored

Oregon golfer and Live Oak grad John Ellis was named to the men’s All-Pac-10 team.

The Ducks finished the season tied for ninth, edging Texas-El Paso by one stroke Saturday at the NCAA West Regional to earn an automatic berth to the May 28-31 NCAA Championships in Stillwater, Okla.

Ellis, the senior Oregon captain and older brother of the two golfers, finished the regionals with his third straight 73. He was the Ducks’ highest finisher, tying for 22nd at 3-over 219, which was also his highest finish in a Regional. Ellis had two birdies, three bogeys and 13 pars Saturday..

Villafuerte placed on DL

Live Oak graduate Brandon Villafuerte was one of three San Diego Padres pitchers to be put on the DL this week. Villafuerte was placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 15, with a right shoulder strain. Villafuerte has made 22 appearances out of the Padres bullpen in 2003, and has a record of 0-2 with two saves and a 4.60 ERA (15 ER/29.1 IP). Villafuerte, who made his Major League debut for the Padres in 2002, has appeared in 62 Major League games, all in relief and has a career record of 1-4 with a 4.29 ERA (34 ER/71.1 IP).

Porras finishes collegiate season

Upper Iowa University junior Jon Porras recently completed his season for the Peacock baseball team. Porras, who is from Morgan Hil, attended Live Oak High School and Gavilan College.

Porras hit .250 (11-for-44) with two doubles, one triple and one home run. He drove in two runs and scored eight times. Porras also collected three hits in seven at bats (.429 average) for the junior varsity team. He doubled and knocked in three runs. Porras is majoring in Psychology at Upper Iowa University. The Peacock baseball team finished the 2003 season 14-22-1 overall and 7-10 in the Iowa Conference.
