LO girls’ volleyball

Live Oak defeated Milpitas Tuesday in five games, 25-23, 25-15, 14-25, 20-25, 15-11, to win its first regular game of the season. The Acorns (4-1) were coming off a first-place pool finish in the Santa Cruz tournament.

Coach Laura Coleman was pleased that her club stayed focused after the holiday weekend.

“We didn’t practice like we should have on the holiday,” Coleman said. “But the girls still came out ready to go. We’re going to have a couple league games like that, so it is important to be able to stay focused.”

The Acorns won the first two rounds against Milpitas and then held on in the fifth game for the victory.

Katarina Cinkova led the Acorns with 13 kills, Kristen Russ had 12 and Kristina Giacalone added 10.

Russ also led the Acorns with 21 digs, and Giacalone had 17. Sabrina La Corte had six aces.

“We played pretty steady,” Coleman said. “Everyone is still getting used to each other. We’re just trying to get it going. We are still spazzy. But our defense and aggressiveness looks good. We’ve just got to get our offense going.”

The Acorns will try to get it going this weekend in the High Sierra Invitational at Galena High School in Reno, Nev. Teams compete in pool games Friday and Saturday morning and then play single-elimination matchers in the afternoon and evening.

Coleman said she hopes the tournament, which many teams from Northern California will compete in, will be a chance to work out some kinks, including her ever-changing rotation.

“What’s nice about having (a big tournament) early is that it helps you get in a rhythm,” Coleman said. “We don’t always do well, but it helps us prepare for league.”

LO Boys’ Water Polo

Live Oak won one of its most lopsided games in recent history Thursday with a 31-1 pounding of visiting Monterey.

Coach Mack Haines couldn’t recall a bigger margin of victory for the Acorns, but said he would have preferred if it had been closer. Monterey has been on the decline the last couple years without a JV team.

“It sounds like we ran up the score, but we didn’t,” Haines said. “We let the starters play hard for the first quarter, then they came out. We told our kids not to shoot until there were five second left. We tried different defenses and goalies.”

Justin Short, Kyle Fast and Bryson Bailey led the Acorns with four goals. Cameron Peachey, Sam Cretcher and Mike Wu had three. Shea Coleman and Patrick Powers had two and Shevie Sendejas, Steven Rick, Lev Bakin, Ryan Listol, Patrick Acevedo and Mike Acevedo all scored single goals.

LO Girls’ water polo

Live Oak opened up its season Thursday with a 27-6 victory over visiting Monterey. The Acorns are hosting six teams this weekend in the round-robin format Wahine Classic and will have two teams playing themselves. Games Saturday begin at 9am and end at 3pm.
