CLUB RUGBY: South Valley wins DIII state title; regionals next

Live Oak will participate in fifth Annual Pacific Coast
Invitational starting April 25
MORGAN HILL — The club rugby team from Live Oak High School ended its regular season last Saturday with a humbling 83-5 loss to the East Palo Alto Razorbacks.

The Acorns’ offense was hampered without Alex Muhn, who was injured in Live Oak’s previous game against Peninsula Green.

East Palo Alto scored nine tries — eight converted — in the first half to lead 61-0 at the break. The Razorbacks’ West Point-bound and Under-19 National Team player, Will Holder, scored four of those tries and converted eight of his team’s nine tries for 36 points.

East Palo Alto stretched its lead to 83-0 with four second-half tries and a conversion before freshman winger Mitch Marcum slipped through a crack in the Razorback defense to touch down Live Oak’s only score as time expired. The conversion went wide.

The Acorns’ 2009 campaign is not done yet. The Live Oak ruggers will compete in the fifth Annual Pacific Coast Invitational Tournament at San Jose State University starting April 25.
