A life-flight helicopter was called to the scene of a single-vehicle accident, which closed down a section of Monterey Road in south Morgan Hill Wednesday morning.

The accident was reported about 10:45 a.m. on Monterey Road near East Middle Avenue. A two-door Toyota Tacoma pickup truck was traveling south when it crashed into a tree and then rolled into a PG&E utility pole, according to Morgan Hill Police Sgt. Jerry Neumayer.

The driver, a 61-year-old man from Nevada, had to be cut out of the wreckage with hydraulic tools, Neumayer said. He was in “serious condition” when police and paramedics arrived at the scene, having suffered a broken wrist, a broken leg and other injuries. The victim, whose name police did not release, was flown by helicopter to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center.

The crash also damaged an electricity transformer atop the utility pole into which the truck collided. PG&E crews responded to repair the damage, which resulted in outages to at least two traffic lights on Monterey Road – one at the intersection of Middle Avenue and one at the intersection of John Wilson Way, according to witnesses.

Monterey Road between the two intersections was closed to all vehicle traffic, and was expected to remain closed until the early afternoon while PG&E repaired the power lines.

Police do not know the cause of the accident. Neumayer said witnesses at the scene reported seeing the truck swerving before the accident. No other vehicles were involved.
