With the unveiling of the new mural, “A World of Respect,” San Martin/Gwinn Elementary students are showing off the work of a year-long project, working in collaboration with students from Gavilan College.

Approximately 30 sixth graders worked with 10 college students over the course of the school year, participating in more than 25 mural workshops, talking about the theme of the mural and learning about techniques for painting murals.

Artistic Director Aaron Saucedo, a Gavilan College graduate led the workshops, with Program Director r2row. Saucedo and r2row are a part of the OjO Murals 4 Service, a Gavilan College program that creates murals in communities using a year-long educational process to teach community organizations how to express themselves via mural creation.

In keeping with the theme of respect; during the creation process, each participant was encouraged to express his or her ideas (or ideals) of respect. Many of these ideas were then integrated into the mural A World of Respect.
