FURTHER EARTHQUAKES

Scientist Explains Cause of Temblors and Says There Will Be No More for Years

Stanford University – Professor T. J. J. See, the famous astronomer of the naval observatory at Mare Island, delivered an address on “The Cause of the Earthquakes” before a general university audience in the chapel under the auspices of the Sigma Xi science honor society.

Earthquakes are due, he said to the development of steam pressure just under the earth’s crust, chiefly by the penetration of sea water from the leakage of the ocean beds. The earth has a temperature of about 2000 degrees at a depth of twenty miles, and when the steam pressure ten or fifteen miles deep has become great enough it shakes the crust and obtains relief at the margins of the sea by the pushing up of mountains. All mountain chains are formed in this way, and that is why they are always parallel to the sea shore.

As the outcome of his studies of all the principal earthquakes in the world, Professor See said he had reached the conclusion that there is no danger of another serious earthquake at San Francisco for a long time, say at least for fifty or seventy-five years. It will take that length of time for the steam pressure to again accumulate under the bed of the sea, for the leakage is through solid rock over ten miles thick, and thus extremely slow.
